Meet the Staff of Wachusett Free Press

 Jennifer Schofield, Publisher

Jennifer Schofield has lived in Medway since 2007 and has spent more than 25 years working in the print industry. She built her career at the Boston Herald and, for the past six years, has been with Our Town Publishing, where she has helped grow their community newspaper publications as Advertising Sales Director. In September 2025, Jennifer and her husband Marty, took over ownership of Our Town Publishing, home of our 16 community newspapers, including Wachusett Free Press. On a personal note, Jen is a proud mom of a 16-year-old rising junior at Xaverian Brothers High School and recently celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary with her husband, Marty. Family, community, and connection remain at the center of everything she does. Reach out to her at [email protected]

 Martha Akstin, Managing Writer

Martha Akstin’s professional career has included working at AIDS Project Worcester, as a legislative aide at the Massachusetts State House, and as an editor and writer at Worcester Magazine and Inside Worcester. Prior to being lured out of retirement by Kim Vasseur and Jen Schofield with promises of excitement and riches as the managing writer at Wachusett Free Press, Martha had been quietly enjoying beekeeping, hiking at Quabbin Reservoir with her husband Dave, and traveling with him to visit their children. Now she’s learning more about the town and area she and her family have known and loved for almost 40 years. If you know someone or something that would make a great story, please email her at [email protected]. And thanks, Kim and Jen. The best is yet to come.

 Kate Carr, Advertising Executive

Kate Carr, our new advertising executive, is a familiar face to many in the Worcester County communities, bringing 15 years of valuable experience in print and digital advertising to our team. Kate’s career has been driven by a passion for connecting local businesses with their communities. She understands the power of a strong, local voice, and her expertise will be instrumental in helping the Wachusett Free Press grow.

When she's not working, Kate can be found enjoying time with her family and friends, many of whom are in the Wachusett District. Her love for her family and her deep roots in the area are a testament to her commitment to the community we all share. She is looking forward to connecting with the local businesses here and helping the Wachusett Free Press become a valuable source of local news and entertainment for all in the communities! Reach out to Kate at [email protected]

Kimberly Vasseur, Graphic Design and Marketing

Kim Vasseur is a lifelong Paxton resident with 25 years in the print publishing industry (Worcester Magazine and The Landmark, among others) with her design work winning her numerous awards in advertising and editorial design. Despite the notion that "print is dead," she believes that Community News is even more important than ever – and looks forward to helping the Wachusett Free Press bring that sense of community back to local journalism. Think she looks familiar? She might have made you a Mai Tai or served up some cheese monas at the Wong Dynasty where she bartends part-time. Reach out to her at kvasseur@wachusettfreepress.com
