A thank you letter to our Paxton community
August 16
Dear Paxton,
One week ago, our family became uprooted from our home due to a fire caused by a lightning strike. Gratefully, my husband and I were awake when the fire started and were able to get our kids and dog out quickly and we were all unharmed. Sadly, our beloved 19 year old cat did not make it out, and we hope that she has transitioned on to a kitty paradise where she can be at peace.
While we lost all our belongings, including our two cars, we’ve gained more of what truly matters: new friends and a deeper appreciation for our community amidst this family crisis.
Firstly, we are tremendously grateful to the Paxton Fire Department, the fire departments from nearby towns, Paxton Police, American Red Cross, and other first responders for their incredible service and dedication to caring for our family and the safety of the community. Our kids will grow up knowing and admiring firsthand the heroic work you all do.
And to you, our Paxton community: THANK YOU! Words truly fall short to express our gratitude for all that has been given to us this past week. From the passerby who stopped their cars to help us, to our neighbors across the street who sheltered us and organized donations for our immediate needs, to all the folks who have given donations - you all have been a life raft for us and we wholeheartedly thank you.
Since moving to our house on Holden Road a little less than two years ago, we have loved creating a home there among the pines and we hope to rebuild and return to our lives there soon. The Paxton community is a very special one and once we’re back on our feet we look forward to finding ways our family can give back to the community that we have received so much from already.
For now we welcome your continued positive thoughts, prayers, and good energy as we face the long road ahead. We will recover.
Gratefully,
The Shimizu-Kelley Family
