100th anniversary update at Sovittaja Park

Sep 09, 2026 ● By Gail Cole

The summer of 2026 at Sovittaja Park in Rutland has been busy but enjoyable for those who attended our centennial celebratory events.

In June we hosted the 2024 Finlandia Foundation Performer of the Year Miska Kajanus. July brought the 55th annual chicken barbecue that served 287 people and included scholarship presentations to five recipients and a raffle of 175 items. In August the FHSS prepared a traditional coffee with the Finns event that highlighted traditional Finnish treats, coffee, breads, cheese, and Fazer chocolates. Finnish music played as old and new friends enjoyed the afternoon together.

On September 13, a birch tree landscape painting workshop will be held by local artist Jen Swan of Barre who is also a member. Reservations were required by September 1 and the limit has been filled. However, if you would like to host a painting workshop, contact hert by email at [email protected].

The season at Sovittaja will end with our final Scandinavian dancing event on Saturday September 19 from 7-10 p.m. with Dan Mackowiak on accordian. Admission is $10 with refreshments provided.

While our facility is closed in the winter, we look forward to providing more events in the summer of 2027. Be sure to follow our Facebook page for updated information. The community support has been greatly appreciated.
